We'll miss you. What's your oldest cookbook, Margery?

The American Woman’s Cookbook, c. 1953. Published by Culinary Arts Institute, Chicago. Edited by Ruth Berolzheimer, Director of Culinary Arts Institute. That’s the oldest official hardcover

cookbook. I also have a cookbook from the Altar Society of St. Paul’s Catholic Church from my home town of Iroquois, South Dakota entitled “Iroquois’ Treasure of Personal Recipes” published in 1952. My mom’s recipe in it was for Rhubarb Cake. I had an earlier cookbook (1950) from the Methodist Church in my hometown, but gave it to my high school friend whose mom had recipe in it. My final “official” cookbook is from Pillsbury’s 2nd Grand National Recipe and Baking Contest (1951) — 100 Prize-Winning Recipes. It’s a paperback that cost 25 cents. Then, I have my mom’s recipe boxes of handwritten recipes on 3 X 5 cards that have recipes from my mom plus ladies in my hometown as well as various relatives. I still remember the handwriting of some of those women. It’s really a treat to look at them — and, yes, I’ve made some of the recipes.

Sounds so good! But, I'll be at work. I think, probably, Better Homes and Gardens, circa 1940... dark green cover, petit-four pictures in fly leaves. Love it!

Moosewood isn't nearly as old, but still a favorite.

Do you record it? It would be great to see them all. Have fun.

Yes, as mentioned above it will be recorded. I'll send out another email when it goes up in the video section with a link.

Such a great idea, Kate! Unfortunately I’m on the road and not near enough to peruse my cookbook collection and probably can’t join the zoom meeting, much as I’d like to. But here’s what I remember:

I think I purchased my first cookbook when I was first living on my own while attending college. It was a paperback edition of the All New Fanny Farmer Boston Cooking School Cookbook. It was a paperback edition and I was living in an apartment in Waltham, Massachusetts trying to figure out how to feed myself. I think the first thing I looked up was how to hard boil an egg! I don’t have the book anymore—I believe it fell apart years ago—but now I’m going to have to order a used copy!

If you can pop in for a bit, even if you are in the car, we'd love to see you, Ruth!

Oh yes, how to hard boil an egg is a skill many of us are still trying to master!

Kate, I will try to tune in if I can from wherever we happen to be at the time. Re hardboiled eggs: would you believe I still have to look that up whenever I make them?

YES! I have to do that, too...every. darn. time!
