#144: When Your 4-Legged Companion Can't Tell You What Is Wrong
Looks like we're in for a long sleepless weekend.
Thank you to all who checked in via comments and emails about the last entry. I had no idea that my words would reach that tender spot for so many. Please be kind to yourselves and do something special just for you. My special something was to buy a nifty bamboo shelf unit that is just perfect for my non-paper towels plus seasonings and a few stray bags of spices. I haven’t used paper towels for over 3+ years now. Instead I buy myself a pack of flour sack towels and another of wash clothes each year to use in the kitchen. Yes, they do get stained with use, so after a full year they are delegated to more heavy-duty cleaning chores. In the third year I retire them. The cost of the towels and wash clothes is about $25 each year which I feel is a great deal since a 2-pack of paper towels is now going for about $5.50!
Gretapie
It’s hard when your beloved 4-legged companion is hurting and can’t tell you what is wrong. Last night Gretapie couldn’t seem to get comfortable at all. She would lay down for 20 seconds, get up, walk around, futz with a blanket on one of her multiple beds, lay down for 20 seconds, get up again, walk around…in obvious discomfort. About 1:30 AM I bundled up in barn boots, coat, hat and gloves and went outside with her to see if she needed to poop or pee. Once out the door, she walked straight over to Duncan and Olivia’s back deck, sat at their door waiting to be let in, and wouldn’t budge when I gestured for her to follow me home. I came back with her leash and clipped it into her collar. Then we slowly strolled around the entire property in case she needed to relieve herself but when I let her off the leash at our back door, she turned and started to walk back over to the other house. I got her back inside, checked on the fire in the wood-stove, turned off the lights, and went back to bed hoping that she would settle down, but the up-down-walk-around behavior continued for the rest of the night, and neither of us got much sleep.
