Reading the preamble to the Constitution... made me weep, especially on the eve of a momentous day in our nation's history. We are standing on the precipice of losing 250 years of rights and freedoms, our peoples gasping for breath as we lurch towards authoritarianism. We were born from diversity. Diversity needs to be our standard in our struggle to regain control of our freedoms.
I am reminded of a Star Trek episode that struck me deeply when I first saw it. Spock began wearing a medallion and when asked what it stood for he replied "It is the Vulcan IDIC. Infinite Diversity, Infinite Combinations". I stand for the IDIC.
I made my poster last night, the one I’ll be taking to the No Kings protest in my Texas town. I’m hopeful today is the boost that many need to get out of their seats. ❤️
Thanks for this thoughtful, informative piece, Kate! Apple pie is a perfect metaphor to choose for our country in this moment when what we thought was a rock-solid democracy is at a tipping point. The greatness of America rests on its diverse peoples, the majority of whom are descendants of immigrants or are themselves immigrants; they are the ingredients that come together to form the more perfect union—the delicious “pie” we’ve been privileged to enjoy. I hope people will stand up today to speak out peacefully for our democracy at one of the thousands of “No Kings Day” rallies taking place around the country: https://www.nokings.org There is nothing more American than gathering freely and nonviolently to speak your mind—unless it’s digging into a slice of apple pie!🥧🍎
Wonderful posting! Thank you so much for sharing this. I’ve been grieving for the state of our country and the world and this was a lovely moment. I have three apple trees that my #3 grandmother and her first family brought with them from Iowa in the 1940s in pots. They are now huge and feed us and the deer, squirrels, birds and raccoons. Apples are an amazing fruit and I feel undervalued in the present day. So once again thank you.

What a great history lesson this morning, Kate, and so very timely. A question: where do you find leaf lard?! 🍎
I’m preparing for a pie workshop this morning—ALL American Apple pie of course—and will post some mail order sources later, Pam.
Thank you, Kate. No rush...you are BUSY! ❤️

So much information. We need to pull from so many places for something so basic to living as pie. I think there is a message in this.
