When I first had my market stall over 20 years ago everyone made purchases with cash. Gradually it changed to become a mix of cash and card until more recently it was almost all card. And now in the past few months, cash seems to be making a come back, enough for it to be noticeable. I think its a combination of people tracking their spending but very much a back lash against banks and big corporations who make money from credit card sales.

And World Peace cookies have no eggs! They are terrific, aren't they?

We are wondering what is going to become of our funds. I read that the ex-head of Social Security said that he gives Social Security 30 to 90 days before it collapses due to the firings and closing of local offices.

Anyone have a decent live-under bridge to recommend?

I smiled at the link to your tea! My family went to the World’s Fair in Vancouver in 1986 and one of the souvenirs I brought home was some Murchies tea. I wish I could remember what kinds we bought.

World Peace Cookies are incredible. Always a popular part of the holiday cookie assortment.

I am a big fan of their teas! After I disembark the Coho ferry that travels the 22 miles from Port Angeles to Victoria and get through customs, I walk to straight to Murchie’s for elevenses. 🫖

Ive been all cash for 14 years now. You can buy envelope systems to organize, track (and conceal) your cash. Dave Ramsey sells a nice spiral-bound set. The trick is finding a wallet that still has a checkbook slot you can insert them in!

I thought of you, Kate, as I withdrew some cash today! I seem to track my spending more accurately when I use cash. And YES to the cookies! I'm so glad chocolate is a food group of its own!🥰

Sending a wave back your way, Pam! Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate!

Life as we know it now.....sigh.

It’s a good idea to use cash and stop enriching the credit card companies and stiffing the merchants. Thanks for your good example, Kate! I’m also a big fan of Dorie’s World Peace Cookies. The name alone would be enough, but they’re also nirvana for chocolate lovers (isn’t that everybody?).

Chocolate is one of my happy places…along with family, friends, and Bosco!

We mostly use cash and it is amazing how quickly it disappears. However our overall expenses are lower because we are much more aware of the money flowing out.

Exactly!

Using cash when possible is a wonderful idea to help us "think twice" about how we are spending our monies, rather than being somewhat surprised when purchases come in on a monthly bill, sprinkled in with typical household costs! World Peace Cookies... I am hopeful this goal will be more achievable - with more focus on humanity rather than greed - a problematic flaw in humans that repeats itself all too often. World Peace Cookies. Yes! Dorie Greenspan is someone I admire also. I have a collection of her cookbooks and hold her in high regard along with you Kate and a good handful of others that care deeply about their cooking and baking - Why, because you create and share reliable quality recipes! Love the post.

Yes! Think twice, spend once and only when needed. My parents and grandparents (now long gone of course) understood and lived this.

And thank you for your very kind words!

That's really interesting. Such a good discipline. My 70s mindset was dressing up in my pastel formal taffeta gown and waiting for you to pick me up on your hard earned gas money in your yellow VW bug in Goleta or Haley Street. Thanks for all. 💕💕💕

Kate. This is a wonderful post that made me laugh. I hear you. We live in a cash economy here yet the creeping reality of paying with cards (and phones) is actually a gallop. I go to Holland often and cash is nearly a thing of the past there. I applaud your effort and I'm empathetic with your reality!

I wonder how long the cash economy will last.

So great to hear from you, Susan! How’s life in Paris?

Those world peace cookies are SO GOOD. Thanks for the reminder-- I need to bake them again!

I also need to start using cash more often. I keep saying I'm going to do it, and then not going to the bank! ugh.

I use the cash machine when I go to shop at Costco.

a few decades ago, after retirement (3rd time) my husband and I kept a quicken account and entered EVERY penny spent so we could see where it all went. The joke was that we even entered a dime found on the sidewalk for the credit column. It has been brilliant for us but means we always ask for a receipt so we can put the amount in the app. It works for us!

We still use the simple Quicken never tried QuickBooks...never any fees...

I did Quicken for years and then QuickBooks, Kate. It was soooo easy to select a report and get it to my accountant for taxes. For 2-3 years, all went well until the version I bought on disc was no longer supported and didn’t integrate with my bank any longer!

Interesting how we all differ in methods. My husband uses almost all cash. I pretty much go all digital. I rarely use cash, and don’t like pulling out my wallet in lines where everyone can have a peek at what’s in there. I can also keep track of my spending better by seeing it all on my digital platforms (I check them daily), but I can never seem to remember what I spent my cash on in any given day! And when I ask my husband what he spent his hard earned cash on, I usually get a blank stare before he goes to the car and brings back a tangle of crumpled up receipts dated anywhere from two years ago to today!

Ah yes, sis! I have found old receipts when looking for current ones. It’s astounding to look back to see that prices, which I thought to be high then, would be welcome now!
