“…And stretched out by the fire with a really good book to read and popcorn at hand is not a very dire fate to wish on anyone.” —Gladys Taber from Stillmeadow Daybook
I look out my northeast windows and see bits of blue sky between clouds of purple, pink and gold. They echo the western sky reflecting the rays of the setting sun. After the summer drought—yes, we go into drought every summer now—the river of skywater has been overflowing generously. Meteorologists call it an atmospheric river. I still say “it’s raining cats and dogs.”
Next year’s garlic crop needs to be planted, one last mow, the outside faucets covered so they don’t freeze…somehow everything will get done…it always does.
Early this afternoon I walk along the bluff and listen to the waves below. The rain begins and I head for home.
Down the alley, through the gate and backdoor. Gloves, hat, and coat are wet now. I take them off, hang them to dry and head to the kitchen for a snack— a quesadilla made on my trusty cast-iron skillet which doubles as a comal. The cheese melts in the tortilla and I stand at the kitchen counter eating it with a little hot sauce—I like the green stuff best.
There’s a knock at the front door and I walk over to open it. A parcel from the delivery person. Thank you, have a good evening!
The sky is darker now. I settle into the big green chair, switch on the light and pick up a book. It’s about Hygge.
The fire in the woodstove crackles. Perhaps I’ll make a bowl of popcorn.
R is for rest.
Coming up next: More of the trek along the GR 34 in Brittany.
