I sensed it a few weeks ago—that teensy-tiniest hint of cool on skin and the angle of light as it drifts further southward. Subtle shifts signaling change. While so many are challenged by heat, wind, water, fire and drought, the summer here at Pie Cottage has been lovely—not too hot, relatively smoke free and—knock on wood1—may it continue that way. I look forward to the quiet time of my wood-stove, simmering soup, seeing my breath on a frosty morning, watching the sun rise late and set early. I long for the season of replenishing. But before I can, there is work to do. Apples, pears and quince to pick and process, a last harvest of rhubarb (yes, mine is still producing!), planting next season’s garlic crop, a compost to pile to rebuild. These chores don’t happen by themselves.

Last night I watched Michelle Obama’s speech at the DNC and was inspired by her words.

“Michelle Obama is asking … no, I’m telling y’all to do something.”

In the Washington Post this morning Michele L. Norris writes, “Voting is only one part of the equation and anyone can play a role by countering lies, making phone calls, getting people to the polls or driving up enthusiasm.”

Talk to your neighbors and friends. Make a Red, White, and Blue Pie and share it with them. Ask questions and take the time to listen to responses. And most importantly, be sure you and yours are registered and ready to vote.
