In like a lamb here in Ohio where it will be an odd 70° today- before plunging back to cold and a threat of snow tomorrow. Ah winter in the Midwest! Potato scones sound like a perfect solution for the upcoming chill down!

Lovely watercolor! What type of potatoes do you recommend for the scones?

I’d never heard them referred to as root children. The drawing of them is lovely.

Today’s post was a delight, as always. Loved the poem, the root children, the glimpse into your journey and the way you share yourself with us, your readers. Thank you for recipes, stories, nostalgia and the chance to read a letter from you. I don’t take time to reply to your posts but I devour each one. When the post arrives I find a quiet space to read and enjoy.

Thanks for this recipe, Kate! Growing up my mother had a fudge recipe made with unseasoned mashed potatoes. Sounds odd, but it was delicious, and you'd never know it contained potatoes. I still have that recipe, along with so many others of my mother's. When I was a young girl, my father gave me a leather journal, with my name and "A Collection of My Mother's Recipes" embossed in gold on the front. My mother spent many hours writing in her favorite recipes, and I am forever grateful that she did!

Lovely letter, Kate! I love the idea of "root children".

I wish I could attend tea, but the Substack app refuses to acknowledge that I am a paid subscriber. That's what happened in February and I have been unable to get anyone to assist me. I get the newsletter and recipes and your other subscriber content from email, just can't do anything through the app.

I will make tea and scones and be with you all in spirit on the 11th.

Yes, I did log in. Your newsletter is listed as a free subscription in my library and when I open it, I'm prompted to upgrade to a paid subscription. The same thing is happening to the other paid subscriptions I have. Nothing is showing as paid.

There is no support that I can find for the app. There is a FAQ for using it and for writers, etc, but nothing for troubleshooting issues.
