As I started to read your post, I thought of that twilight zone episode, and then I saw that you mentioned it! That twilight zone episode was traumatic for me since I was always a big reader even as a young child. The closest I got to living inside a book was when I worked at Borders books and music in the 90s. Surrounded by books, I was in heaven! I hope you feel better soon.😘🌷

I worked at Elliott Bay Books in Seattle in the early 80s. Bliss!

Oh, Kate! I'm one of those who literally gets so into reading something I like that the hall alarm could go off over my head and I wouldn't hear it (this used to happen A LOT in school and I'd wonder where everyone went). Love the whole aesthetic of touching books, being able to wander through them and re-read over and over. Computers can't compare; Kindle will NEVER interest me and, sadly yes my eyes are getting worse but BOOKS ARE MY FRIENDS! Thanks for reminding me how much pleasure they give. They DO have a habit of multiplying, though, even when I'm trying to be "good"...!

There are much worse “addictions” to have … this is a good one!

Burgess Meredith.

I think of that Twilight Zone episode when someone talks love of reading.

Or sometimes when I need an illustration of the irony ties that bind.

Gretel Ehrlich wrote one titled The Solace of Open Spaces.

She’s a writer, reader, who dipped into her open spaces interiority to wax lyrical-poetical on the wide open exteriority of Wyoming.

I haven’t read it, but I did read her This Cold Heaven: Seven Seasons in Greenland which is why I know I want to read Solace.

The world centrifuge spins lucky ones into the refuge solace of open books.

And with all that spinning, eyeglass retainers are a good idea, as The Twilight Zone showed.

I didn't know of Gretel Ehrlich and now have put Solace on hold at my library. Thank you for the introduction to her. I look forward to getting to know her works. And yes to eyeglass retainers!

Here's that funny thing that happens. I'm listening to / watching this vid about "what happened to small trucks?" & up pops Burgess Meredith @ 1:27 :

You're welcome. And if you get to Solace before I do, which is likely given the book stack-queue here, maybe you'll pass along some interpretations of her recipe.

Speaking of which I did up the gingerbread recipe a few days ago: very good!

Great to hear and that's more than a little synchronicity!

Reading is key to all things. Please feel better soon. xo

It sure is! I do feel up to taking my grand to storytime today!

Let us know how you like that book by Kate Quinn. I have read a couple of her historical fiction books and I couldn’t put them down! The last one I selected for my book club … The Diamond Eye. It’s based on a true story of a female Russian sniper during WWII. I love a good story about a woman that kicks a**! I recommend it!

I’m going to look for that one. Thanks for the recommendation, Anne, and hope you and your 4-legged family are happy and well.

Take care, Kate! I'm glad you are surrounded by books and Mr. B! Kate Quinn is one of my favorites. I'll check out THE ASTRAL LIBRARY! 📚

Let us know what you think, Pam.

Feel better, Kate! ❤️ (you’ve got me curious about The Astral Library)

Thank you! (It’s so different than her other books.)

My son told me when he was a child, to feel better, he’d grab a bag of “fishes”, a book and go crawl in bed. Still reads and writes. I loved - and hated - The Twilight Zone. So thoughtful, but tormenting. The episode that stuck with me was something about a man deciding if it was better to die in the heat or the cold? I hope you feel tipsy top soon.

Dear Kate,

I hope you are soon feeling back to your "old" or maybe "even better" self! Getting a stomach bug or other ailment that interferes with your eating certainly puts things in perspective.

I find it helps me be more mindful of eating in general. Thinking about "am I really hungry?" "Is this the food my body wants and needs at this time?" A good reminder to slow down and savor --pun intended.

I currently work part time in a library. And the readers I encounter are so engaged, thoughtful, voracious readers, of all genres and authors. So much fun to get recommendations from them on books they love and/or want to read.

Kate Quinn is a favorite author--her historical fiction in very engaging. The Astral Library was a fun departure--and the beautiful book edges---I love seeing so many new books getting this artistic treatment.

Here's to your continued recovery, storytimes with your grandson, and many more enjoyable hours reading, Ellen

I am completely in love with reading. And writing. And talking about books with other bibliophiles. Just visited the Bodleian Library and it is a temple to books📚

That Twilight Zone episode breaks my heart every time I see it.

Kate McDermott's avatar

Yup, but I won’t rewatch it now as it’s part of CBS/Paramount.

When I was young, I sometimes would "pretend to be sick" -- not so that I could miss school but so that I could lay in bed all day and read a good book! I know deep down my mother knew I was faking, but she also loved to read and sometimes she would declare a "sick day" for herself and climb into bed and read with me. Such sweet memories. I hope you feel better soon, Kate!

I did that, too, Kimberly!
